Digital technology is now being used in dental radiographs (x-rays). We are very proud to offer this service to all of our patients. Digital technology allows us to take routine x-rays with up to 90% less radiation! Rather than a film, a sensor that is the same shape and size as the film is used. When the sensor is exposed to radiation, an instantaneous picture is shown on the computer monitor. This also eliminates the need for chemicals to develop films. Not only is digital technology beneficial to our patients, it is good for the environment as well. Please call us to find out more about digital x-rays.
Oral Cancer Screening
It is not often that we think of dentists as saving lives. But now, with new advances in technology, we can do just that! A simple, quick, and painless exam helps us identify oral lesions at their earliest stage of development. When a pre-malignant lesion, or early stage oral cancer is found, treatment is simpler, less invasive, and more than 90% successful. Dr. Keefer and other progressive dentists use a screening process to help identify abnormalities that may develop into oral cancer.
Are you at risk for oral cancer? Patients at highest risk are those who are age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors (tobacco use or alcohol consumption) or a previous history of oral cancer. Other risk factors include tobacco use at any age (this includes smokeless tobacco), and sexual activity, especially in the 18-39 year old age group. If you think you are not at risk for oral cancer, think again! According to the American Dental Association, 25% of oral cancers occur in people who do not smoke or have other lifestyle risk factors.
If you are sexually active, here's another reason to think about oral cancer. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is an extremely common sexually transmitted infection and especially prevalent in young adults. Few people even know they have it. HPV has long been known to cause cervical cancer and now studies suggest it also plays a role in more than 20% of oral cancer cases. Don't take chances with your life! If you are in one of these risk groups, please contact Dr. Keefer about receiving a quick and painless exam.
Ultrasonic Scalers vibrate ultrasonically to remove unhealthy deposits of calculus and tartar very quickly, eliminating the need for heavy handed scraping. If you have a buildup of tartar, this is a great way to have it removed. Our hygienists are trained in the use of ultrasonic scalers. Call us today to schedule an appointment!
