As previously discussed, a crown is a permanent fixture that is placed over your natural tooth. They are used to restore strength, function, size, shape, and appearance of a tooth. Crowns are available in porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and full cast metal alloy crowns (i.e. Gold). Gold crowns are usually used in back teeth for durability. Dental implants are a great way to permanently replace missing teeth. They are small titanium screws or cylinders that are surgically inserted into the upper or lower jawbone to replace the roots of the missing tooth. After healing takes place around the titanium implant, a crown will be placed over the implant. This provides the patient with a permanent fixture that is completely natural looking and feeling. Implant crowns cannot decay and usually don’t get gum disease. Dental implants were originally developed to help patients retain their lower dentures. If you or a friend has a full lower denture, you know the trials and tribulations of trying to eat with teeth that don't stay in place! As few as 2 dental implants can be used to stabilize a lower denture, making eating enjoyable again. To learn more about dental implants, please call our office today. A bridge is an appliance that is made to replace the space where one or more teeth have been lost. Its purpose is to not only replace missing teeth, but to deter bone loss that occurs from losing teeth. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to move or shift, loss of chewing function, and can add age to your appearance. A bridge is a permanent fixture that cannot be removed because it is cemented to adjacent remaining teeth. Bridges, like crowns, are usually made of metal, ceramic, or both.
Removable Partial Dentures
A removable partial denture is similar to a bridge, except that it is not a permanent fixture. Its purpose is to replace missing teeth, but it can be removed for cleaning and sleeping. A quality removable partial denture has a cast framework, with acrylic "saddles" to hold the replacement teeth.
Full dentures are another type of removable appliance, similar to a removable partial denture. A full denture is used to replace all teeth on the upper arch, lower arch, or both. Most full dentures are made from heat processed acrylic to which the teeth are bonded. Other materials can be used in patients with allergies to acrylic. Sometimes it is advantageous to have dental implants placed to stabilize lower dentures. Please contact us today to see if implant supported dentures are right for you.
